LONDON AFROBEAT COLLECTIVE 2026
About this event
LONDON AFROBEAT COLLECTIVE ON JULY 23 AT 16 TONES (VALENCIA)
8 musicians. One goal: to increase positive energy in the world by making people dance!
London Afrobeat Collective is a close-knit family of musicians from all over the world, based in London and united by their love of Afrobeat and their desire to take original music to new territories.
From Europe to Africa, from Glastonbury Festival to Felabration in Lagos, they offer celebratory music born from a truly global DNA. This eight-member collective, hailing from England, Italy, France, Congo, Argentina, and New Zealand, blends traditional Afrobeat with funk, jazz, rock, Latin rhythms, and dub to create something unique.
In their early days, the band received a major boost when their debut album LAC (2010) catapulted them through the Glastonbury Emerging Talent competition to opening the West Holts stage in 2011. This was followed by a long list of festivals (Bestival, Secret Garden Party, Green Man, Cheltenham Jazz Festival) and, by 2015, with the release of their second album Food Chain, they began touring mainland Europe, while continuing to perform at UK festivals and maintaining a steady presence in London venues.
The band combines a love and respect for Afrobeat traditions with a desire to create original, genre-crossing music. They were honored with an invitation to perform at Felabration at the Shrine in Lagos as part of their tour of Nigeria, and have collaborated live and in the studio with Afrobeat greats such as Dele Sosimi and Tony Allen.
Singing in English, Spanish, Lingala, Yoruba and French, and fusing traditional Afrobeat with influences from funk, jazz, rock, Latin music and dub, London Afrobeat Collective has developed an original sound that allows them to connect with very diverse audiences.
Topesa Esengo Na Motema (“Let’s Give Joy to the Heart”) is the lead single from their upcoming album Esengo (Canopy Records, out February 14, 2024), whose title means “joy” in Lingala. Produced by Sonny Johns (who has collaborated with Tony Allen, Hugh Masekela, Oumou Sangare, Ali Farka Touré, and Polar Bear), the track showcases the band in a more upbeat mood, celebrating the joy of living, reuniting, and hitting the road again. The single is accompanied by a remix from producer and DJ Bosq, which gives the track a unique Afro-Latin disco twist.
And after recent sweeping performances — from opening the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival (Scotland) to Bardentreffen (Germany), Tempo Latino (France), Couleur Café (Brussels), Cully Jazz (Switzerland), Earth Garden (Malta), Kala (Albania), Jazz in the Park (Romania) and many other stages across Europe — the future looks bright for London Afrobeat Collective
