About this event

OVERVIEW

When we think about Africa, we often think about poverty, conflict, and lack of infrastructure. What we hear less about is the remarkable innovation happening across the continent. From renewable energy to agriculture to financial services to health, entrepreneurs are developing solutions designed around the realities of people living far from traditional infrastructure—and some are even creating approaches that are ahead of those found in the Global North.

This talk takes us into the world of these unexpected innovations, exploring how African businesses are rethinking the way people access energy, farm, and use technology. We'll look at the evolution of pay-as-you-go solar, the surprising challenges of bringing productive use of renewable energy to farmers, and new ways of repairing and reusing technology rather than letting it go to waste.

Along the way, we'll discover why a solution that looks brilliant on paper can fail in the real world, and how innovators are adapting by designing around the realities of people's lives. These stories reveal something bigger about innovation: sometimes the most interesting solutions emerge not despite difficult circumstances, but because people have to find new ways to work around them.

It's a story about energy, agriculture, technology—and what happens when innovation starts from the people who need it most.

What You’ll Discover

  • Energy access challenges in Africa: Discover what everyday life looks like when electricity is unavailable, unreliable, or too expensive—and how this has created a need for new approaches to energy, cooking, farming, and everyday work.
  • The evolution of pay-as-you-go solar: Solar power seemed like an obvious solution for communities without reliable access to electricity. But making solar affordable created its own challenges. Explore how companies are experimenting with new business models to keep solar accessible while making sure the systems actually stay in use.
  • When energy meets agriculture: Solar-powered water pumps, mills, and other technologies can make farming easier and more productive. But innovators discovered that giving farmers better technology isn't enough if they can't find a market for what they produce. See how businesses are now connecting energy access with access to markets.
  • Repair, reuse, and giving technology a second life: What happens when a solar product breaks or reaches the end of its warranty? Instead of letting useful technology sit unused, innovators are developing local repair networks, training technicians, and finding new ways to make repairs more accessible and affordable.
  • The bigger lesson about innovation: Across all four stories, we'll see how solutions that look brilliant on paper can fail in the real world—and how innovators adapt by designing around the realities of people's lives.
